Ex-Oz keeper Manou retires from first class cricket
March 12th, 2011 - 1:02 pm ICT by ANIAdelaide, Mar. 12 (ANI): Former Australian wicketkeeper Graham Manou announced his retirement from first class cricket on Saturday.
Thirty-one-year-old Manou emotionally announced his retirement from the game on the third morning of South Australia’s Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania.
“There were times over the past 12 months that I’d questioned myself and my desire to continue to fight and expect what I expect out of myself at this level,” Manou said on Saturday.
“I guess I’ve tried to be as realistic as possible in my own head about where I’m at and where this organization is at as a team and where I want to head in the future. Deep down it was certainly coming and when I had a really good, honest chat with Jamie the other day, I think it was probably time,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Manou, as saying.
Making his debut for South Australia in 1999 after Tim Nielsen retired to pursue his coaching career, Manou played one Test against England at Edgbaston in 2009, and took part in four limited overs matches against India later that year.
He cited those matches, this year’s T20 victory and the first club title for his beloved Northern Districts as career highs, but also singled out the exhilaration of keeping wicket to a young Shaun Tait as something he will never forget.
Manou played 103 first-class matches, making 4003 runs, taking 326 catches and effecting 21 stumpings. (ANI)
