Europa League win will help lift gloom at Liverpool: Benitez

London, Feb 24 (ANI): Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has said winning the Europa League would help lift the gloom after a tough season at the helm of the club.

The competition has plenty of critics and is seen as an anti-climax by the Kop after their disappointing exit from the Champions League.

The Reds go to Romania to face Unirea Urziceni tomorrow hoping to improve on a desperately poor first leg and 0-0 stalemate at Manchester City.

“We know it has not been a good season, but all teams go through periods like this,” The Sun quoted Benitez, as saying.

“When you win a European competition it is always very important. Stevie Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have that experience, also it is something I know from Valencia,” he said.

“If you cannot be in the Champions League, you do your best in this tournament and we would love to give a trophy to our fans,” Benitez added.

Liverpool won the Anfield leg 1-0 and Benitez said: “The attitude of the players has been fantastic. It was massive to see the way they reacted to going out of the Champions League.” (ANI)
