Ethnic Indian ‘Cheer Queens’ replace cheer girls in IPL
April 17th, 2011 - 7:19 pm ICT by IANSNavi Mumbai, April 17 (IANS) Pune Warriors, during their Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter with Delhi Daredevils Sunday, unveiled a new concept at the D.Y. Patil Sports Complex by replacing cheer girls with traditional Indian ‘Cheer Queens’ to goad on the team.
The concept is a brainchild of Sahara India Pariwar’s Managing Worker Chairman Subrata Roy. Indian girls dressed in designer ethnic dance costumes to cheered for the Pune Warriors, who are having a great run in their maiden IPL season.
The costumes have been designed by ace Bollywood designer Neeta Lulla while the dance have choreographed by Tanusree Shankar and Ganesh Hegde.
The Cheer Queens sang and danced Bharata Natyam, Bengali dance, Gujarati Garba, Haryanvi dance, Maharashtrian ‘Lavni,’ Punjabi Bhangra, Mohiniyattam, an official said.
“With Pune Warriors India’s ‘Cheer Queens,’ we intend to showcase and bring recognition to the rich and diverse culture of India at an international platform. The opportunity, which we want all the franchisees of IPL to avail collectively, so that the rich cultural heritage of India is presented in an innovative way to the world,” Roy explained.
Sahara Adventure Sports Ltd Director Abhijit Sarkar said many other innovative ideas were in the pipeline and hoped that masses enjoying the IPL extravaganza would enjoy them
The ‘Cheer Queens,’ would symbolize the graceful and dynamic face of the latest innovation, Sarkar said.
Sarkar said all efforts have been taken to pick and groom talented models from major cities of India through an elaborate process of selection and dance-training (based on India’s ancient dance lineage and customs), with an eye to putting up a show that is both flawless and inspiring.
