London, Jan.26 (ANI): Former England football team coach Sven Goran Eriksson has said that if ever former captain and mid-fielder David Beckham opts to return to England, he will lead the campaign to get him back at the earliest.
Making no secret of his admiration for Beckham, the Sun quoted Eriksson as saying: “If David wants to come back to England I would say yes, come to Manchester City. I still believe he deserves to be in the England team. Not just because of it being his 100th cap, but because he is still a great player. His right foot is still as good as it ever was. Even if he is in America, David can still fight for his place in the team.”
However, he also said that he could not see him coming back to England in the near future, as he had to fulfill his contract with the American football team L.A. Galaxy.
“I can’t see him coming back here. I think he will finish his career in America. He has a long contract and he is very keen to make football popular in America. And if anyone can do that, it’s David,” Eriksson was quoted as saying further.
He also confirmed that he had recently met and had dinner with the Beckhams in London, and they were still in contact with each other.
Becks’ American club L A Galaxy have said this week they would not be willing to let him play elsewhere on loan before their season starts on March 29.
Eriksson is, however, keeping his fingers crossed over new England football coach Fabio Capello allowing Beckham to reach the coveted 100 caps for England when the team squares up against Switzerland on February 6.
Eriksson, 60 next month, added: “I would love to sit on the bench at Wembley just once before I retire - it is still one of my dreams.” (ANI)
