Sydney, Nov 11 (ANI): England’s latest pace sensation Steven Finn has said that he almost quit a promising cricket career to pursue university studies.

He decided to read sports science at the university, but destiny had other things in store for him, and three years later he is into his debut Ashes series as part of England’s bowling attack.

“I had a place at Loughborough [University] to read sports science, I was a day away from going up there, 24 hours from going, and I cancelled it to play cricket,” Finn said.

“It could be potentially the best decision I’ve ever made. I love playing cricket, and even if I was up there I would have been playing cricket all the time, I’m sure. Things might not have accelerated as much as they have but university is something that I seriously considered,” The Sydney Morning herald quoted him, as saying.

“I just thought this is a great opportunity for me. I’d just played three or four first-class games by then, and I thought they’d gone OK and I thought that I had a great opportunity to work on my cricket this winter and I thoroughly enjoyed it,” Finn said.

“Mum wanted me to go to uni because it wasn’t even clear if I was even going to become a successful county cricketer because I was only 18-years-old and I had only played a couple of first-class games,” he said.

“But dad was like, ‘OK, do what you want’, like most dad’s do. They didn’t put pressure on me and left the decision to me,” Finn added. (ANI)
