London, Dec. 4 (ANI): Ahead of tonight’s World Cup draw in Cape Town, David Beckham has said that England is not scared of being drawn in the dreaded ‘Group of Death’
“I’m not worrying about being drawn against a team like France. At this point, when you go into a World Cup, I don’t think you worry about who you’re playing against,” The Mirror quoted Beckham, as saying.”It’s great to be seeded and I was surprised that France weren’t, but if you want to go all the way in the tournament, you’re going to play the best teams at some point. Whoever you come up against, it doesn’t really matter,” he added.
Beckham, who has been given a starring role in the ceremony to draw names from one pot of teams, said England boss Fabio Capello had instilled such a positive mentality in the squad that they were brimming with confidence as the tournament approaches.
“Fabio Capello and his staff have given us this mentality that we can beat anyone. That’s a positive we have as a team and a squad,” he said.
“Look at the qualifying campaign that we have just completed. We’ve topped the group. We went into every game believing we could win it and we’ll adopt the same approach at the World Cup,” he added.
Earlier, England midfielder Frank Lampard had disclosed that his biggest World Cup fear was to be drawn in a Group of Death, during next year’s football carnival in South Africa.
“There’s normally one Group of Death at every World Cup draw and I bet this one will be no different. So while it’s great to be seeded we could still draw Ivory Coast and then Portugal or France. That would be a Group of Death for sure. That would focus the mind all right,” he said. (ANI)
