England keen to forget dismal 2007 WC campaign: Strauss
February 14th, 2011 - 8:16 am ICT by ANIDhaka, Feb.14 (ANI): Skipper Andrew Strauss believes that England has learnt its lessons from their dismal 2007 World Cup campaign, and will be looking forward to the two warm-up games with Canada and Pakistan this week.
Strauss insisted that the squad is ready to add one-day cricket’s biggest prize to the World Twenty20 title they scooped under Paul Collingwood’s leadership last year.
Michael Vaughan’s team flopped badly in the Caribbean in 2007, failing to beat any of the world’s top eight sides - bar West Indies in a dead rubber.
Commenting on the 6-1 one-day series defeat to Australia this winter, Strauss said: “We didn’t play good one-day cricket just recently. But we’ve got a solid squad, a very settled side and we really feel we can do really well in this tournament.”
“We’re excited about it and I think the guys took a lot of confidence from the fact they won the World Twenty20 - they know they can do it on the big stage,” The Sun quoted him, as saying further.
He said: “I hope we’ve learned lessons from it - as we did from the 2006/07 Ashes series - and won’t repeat the mistakes.”
England will go into this year’s World Cup without some of its key men. They include Brilliant middle order batsman Eoin Morgan, who is out with a broken finger and pace duo Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad are nursing knocks.
A fit again Stuart Broad has not played since the second Ashes Test.
Strauss added: “We’re monitoring it on a day-by-day basis.” (ANI)
