England goalkeeper warns of more World Cup frustration
June 20th, 2010 - 7:28 pm ICT by ANICape Town, June 20(ANI): England goalkeeper David James has warned star striker Wayne Rooney and Three Lions’ supporters to expect another frustrating 90 minutes during Wednesday’s World Cup game against Slovenia.
England’s opening Group C game against the US was a 1-1 draw, while their second game against Algeria, ranked 30th in the world, was a goalless draw.
“The game against Algeria is pretty much what we can expect on Wednesday. It has opened our eyes in terms of what we need to do to win the game,” News of The World quoted James, as saying.”Defensively, we were good. Offensively, it was frustrating because Algeria did their homework. Wayne Rooney was forced into positions he didn’t want to be in,” he added.
The 39-year-old further revealed that he was told about replacing Robert Green five minutes before England left their hotel on Friday evening to travel to the stadium in Cape Town.
“I feel some sympathy for Robert Green, of course, but we’re a 23-man squad which means anyone can play at any given time. I knew I was playing five minutes before we left the hotel. Robert wished me all the best,” James said.”The fact I played against Algeria doesn’t mean I’m guaranteed to play in the next match. It’s been a long time waiting for my first game in the World Cup. I have had three attempts at doing it,” he added.
He also said that it’s the first time he is playing in a World Cup, and he doesn’t want “Wednesday to be my last taste of it”. (ANI)
