England deserve to overtake India as No.1: Allan Donald

London, July 27 (IANS) South African bowling great Allan Donald says England deserve to replace India as the No.1 Test team but was confident of the visitors bouncing back in the four-match series after their rout at Lord’s.

Third-ranked England will dislodge India from the top if they win the ongoing series by at least a two Test margin.

“England deserve to be the number one, there is no question about it,” Donald told BBC Radio Tuesday.

“They are a good side, they are progressing every game. They are progressing as a really good unit.”

England’ s excellent bowling performance in the first Test paved the way for a famous 196-run victory in the sport’s 2,000th Test. Donald rates the English bowling attack as “fantastic”.

“Chris Tremlett, Broad, Anderson and Graeme Swann are fantastic. Then you have got a few more in the bank - Tim Bresnan still in the wings.

“It’s amazing how the guys have grown since 2007. Anderson has led the attack with absolute disdain, Broad has gone through a few ups and downs of late.

“It’s good to see him really back and firing, bowling really well with a lot of aggression too. It is nice to know you have got this current crop who are playing and you have also got a few youngsters in the reserves.”

Donald, however, sees India coming back stronger in the second Test starting at Trent Bridge Friday.

“India will find a way and Duncan Fletcher will dig very, very deep to his charges. This is a wake-up call to them.

“Number one is number one but it might not be for very long. They will come back. (Pace bowler) Zaheer Khan is key to their success. If he is fit and raring to go (after a hamstring injury), he might have a bit to say in the second Test,” the 44-year-old added.
