England bowlers to practice with Kookaburra balls to come out swinging
August 1st, 2010 - 6:17 pm ICT by ANISydney, Aug 1 (ANI): England’s fast bowlers will start practicing with the unfamiliar Kookaburra cricket balls well before the Ashes in the hope of reproducing their impressive swing-bowling form in Australia.
The threat posed by Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad and newcomer Steven Finn was reinforced as England demolished Pakistan’s top order in the first innings of the teams’ series-opening Test this weekend.
England bowling coach David Saker said that once the fourth Test was over on August 30 the pacers were scheduled to stop practicing with their customary Dukes-brand balls in favour of the Kookaburras to be used in Australia this summer.
“It definitely still swings. It obviously doesn’t swing as much as the Duke ball but some of that’s got to do with the English conditions, which are usually conducive to swinging the ball, whereas Australian conditions sometimes aren’t,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Saker, as saying.
“We’ll be training hard and we’ll be trying to put things in place that [assist] the English bowlers to swing the ball when they get to Australia. I still believe strongly that that’s one of the best ways to bring down any batting line-up, not just in Australia,” he said.
“We’ll be endeavouring to try and move the ball in the air for sure, but also we’ve got two pretty tall, strong pace bowlers [Broad and Finn] who can get the ball through. There’ll be different ways we’ll attack the Australians, for sure,” Saker added. (ANI)
