Eden Gardens will not miss IPL matches: Sourav

Kolkata, Feb 17 (IANS) Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, who will lead Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata team in the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament, Sunday affirmed that the matches will be held at the Eden Gardens and differences over complimentary tickets for the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) members would be resolved. “The IPL matches will be held at Eden Gardens. Eden is for playing cricket; it is not for mere showcasing. If it is played here (in Eden), junior players of this region can display their talents,” Ganguly told reporters here. IPL is set to commence in April.

IPL chairman Lalit Modi, irked by the queries on complimentary tickets to clubs, members and honorary members of CAB, has threatened the state cricket body of withdrawing the Kolkata team for the Twenty20 venture and playing them in Ahmedabad, one of the reserve venues, if it (CAB) did not adhere to the rules and regulations of the League.

Sourav Ganguly said: “Everyone has to sacrifice to some extent. CAB is getting Rs.100 million from IPL. If no solution is found, then CAB can use that money to buy tickets for the members.”

Earlier, CAB president Prasun Mukherjee said differences over ticket sales would be ironed out soon.

“The whole thing will be sorted out. No one wants the games to go out of Kolkata. There are eight centres and everyone hosts, our people will not lose out on the cricket extravaganza,” Mukherjee said, allaying fears that the cricket crazy people here might miss out on the euphoria.

The CAB has called for a working committee meeting Monday and a special general meeting Feb 26 to resolve differences within the state body.

“And if at all there is a problem, the game will be shifted to one of the four reserve venues and the people who are creating problems now will be responsible for denying the people of Kolkata and Eastern India a superlative cricket tournament,” Mukherjee told IANS here Saturday.
