Kolkata, March 18 (IANS) East Bengal put their AFC Cup campaign back on the track as they braved a blazing sun to script a 1-0 victory against Yemeni side Ahli Sana in their Group-B second round tie here Tuesday. With the win, East Bengal have three points from two outings, having lost their opening game against Lebanon’s Safa FC by a solitary goal in their away game. Sana, who came here with a 1-1 draw at home against Jordanian club Al Wihdat, remain on one point.

The only goal of the match came in the 34th minute, capping a 10- minute domination. A Ibe Ikechukwu Gift’s volley was deflected by Ahmed Khalil to unmarked Edmilson Marquis on the left. The Brazilian’s blockbuster bulged the back of the net. Before the goal, the Kolkatans forced three corners to rattle the Yemenis.

East Bengal’s first big move came within the first quarter of an hour when Edmilson moved up the right flank and sent a low cross that Rahim Nabi nearly redirected to the far corner with a fine header.

East Bengal repeated broke through, but the lack of numerical superiority near the Sana box was their bane. On the other hand, the Yemen side was found wanting both technically as well as tactically.

Coming from a much cooler clime back home, a burning sun at 40 degree celcius drained the Yemeni players, though they showed some urgency in the second half. This side boasts of at least seven of the 11 players from the national side that defeated India 3-0 in Delhi recently.

Sana’s first chance on target was as late as the 70th minute when Ala al Sassi’s flat volley from the top of the box was tipped over by Subrata Pal. They again came close to scoring in the 82nd minute when Alsalemi’s effort on the run skimmed over the crossbar.

East Bengal continued to torment the opposition till the very end with Rahim Nabi’s probing runs down the left flank and Mahrajuddin wadoo and Mehtab Hossain combing well in the midfield. Return of a fit M Suresh lent them the much-needed sanity in defence.
