Durand Cup prize money increased

New Delhi, Sep 26 (IANS) The winner’s prize money for the 124th edition of the Durand Cup has been increased four-fold from Rs.5 lakhs to Rs.20 lakhs while the overall budget has been hiked from Rs.43 lakh to Rs 1.54 crore, it was announced here Monday.

The runners-up will get Rs.10 lakh abd the third-placed team Rs.5 lakh.

“We have increased the prize money and the overall budget of the tournament,” said Maj. Gen. Manvinder Singh, GOC Delhi area and chairman of the standing working committee of Durand Football Tournament Society.

Singh said that the next edition of the third oldest tournament will be bigger and better and preliminary rounds will be held outside Delhi.

I-League’s three leading clubs - Dempo, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan - will be missing from this year’s action.

The first round of the tournament starts October 4. The final has been slated for October 15, with the semifinals slated for October 12.
