Dortmund defeat Freiburg, Nuremberg stun Leverkusen in Bundesliga

Berlin, Dec 18 (IANS) Defending champions Borussia Dortmund crushed bottom of the table team Freiburg 4-1 thanks to striker Robert Lewandowski’s brace and took their undefeated streak to 11 games in the Bundesliga football. Nuremberg demolished Leverkusen 3-0 in another match.

Dortmund started with an early goal in the seventh minute, much to the dismay of home fans as striker Lewandowski slotted home from close range. Freiburg levelled the score courtesy midfielder Jan Rosenthal in the 34th minute.

Ten minutes later, Dortmund’s youngster Ilkay Gundogan gave his side the lead after shooting into an open goal.

After the break, Dortmund stepped up the pressure and were rewarded with another two goals, one by midfielder Kevin Grokreutz at the hour mark and one by Lewandowski, ten minutes later.

Freiburg go into the winter break in last position of the standings with 13 points, while Dortmund are second with 34 points.

Bayer Leverkusen suffered a setback before the winter break as Nuremberg handed them a 3-0 thrashing at the Bay Arena.

The shock victory moved Nuremberg to the 15th position with 18 points while Leverkusen stays on sixth position with 26 points.

Hamburg denied Augsburg their fourth win of the season thanks to an equaliser by striker Jose Paolo Guerrero to extend their unbeaten streak to nine matches.

Hamburg dominated the match but it was Augsburg that opened the scoring in the 63rd minute thanks to striker Torsten Oehrl.

Hamburg remained unfazed and levelled the score only three minutes later through striker Guerrero, who headed home a free kick cross.
