tobyDec. 11, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Doak Walker award was won by Toby Gerhart from the University of Stanford on the Dec. 10. The award is given to the nation’s best running back of the season. Toby Gerhart is in his freshman year, and has to his credit more touchdowns and rushing yards than any other player in the country of his stature. He has scored touchdowns in every game he has taken part in but one. His other achievements include topping 100 yards 10 times. He has also topped 200 yards at least 3 times. In almost every game, he has averaged 4.4 yards for each carry at least.

The award ceremony was held at Disney World, at the college awards ceremony that is held every year. The other finalists for the award, besides Toby Gerhart, were Mark Ingram from Alabama and C.J. Spiller from Clemson. Toby Gerhart’s winning the Doak Walker award has definitely been helped by the fact that the University of Stanford had gone from 1-11, and thanks to the running back, has advanced to its first bowl game. Currently, he is second only to Darrin Nelson in the University’s list of the highest rushing yards.

Toby Gerhart had gone to the Disney World after completing his archeology paper. He is currently siting for his final examinations. Winning the award was, admittedly, a dream come true for him. He felt that winning the award has been a remarkable experience for him, and football finally felt like fun. On the other hand, he felt that Mark Ingram from Alabama was also worthy enough for the honor, admitting that he is a great player.
