‘Disgraced’ Terry to tell Capello he doesn’t want to quit
February 2nd, 2010 - 4:59 pm ICT by ANILondon, Feb. 2 (ANI): England captain John Terry, who came under fire for having a fling with team-mate Wayne Bridge’s former girlfriend, is likely to tell coach Fabio Capello that he doesn’t want to step down as a skipper.
“JT has wanted to be England captain since he was a kid, so if people think he’s going to give that up they’ve got another thing coming,” a close friend of Terry said.
“His life off the pitch has got nothing to do with his abilities as a player or as a captain. He believes he can still do the job on the pitch - and that’s all that matters in his eyes. You tell me a better man to lead England? There isn’t one,” he added.
Terry will have to convince his teammates as well as Capello that he is the guy for the job. The defender has already spoken with England assistant manager Franco Baldini last night as he headed up for tonight’s game at Hull.
Meanwhile, in a clumsy intervention, England Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe urged the Football Association (FA) to explain its stance on Terry. And his clumsy intervention only helped Terry’s cause.
On Monday, a FA spokesperson said: “Fabio is fully up to speed with developments regarding John Terry. He spoke with our Chairman Lord Triesman and Chief Executive Ian Watmore today, who both backed him to make the best decision for England on footballing grounds.”
“Fabio is dealing with the matter in his own way using his extensive experience as a football manager,” he added. (ANI)
