Dhoni refuses to take queries on Sehwag’s fitnessJune 10th, 2009 - 12:44 am ICT by IANS
Nottingham, June 9 (IANS) India’s cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni Tuesday refused to take any questions from the media on his deputy Virender Sehwag’s fitness.
Sehwag has been ruled out of the World Twenty20 due to an apparent shoulder injury and will return home.
On the eve of the match against Ireland, Dhoni was asked about Sehwag’s fitness and he said: “Whatever is related to fitness, you will get it from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).”
Asked why he could not provide information on his players’ fitness, a miffed Dhoni said: “I’m not going to say anything on that.”
But when asked whether he was aware of Sehwag’s fitness, Dhoni replied: “Yes, I am.”
Dhoni’s indifferent attitude on Sehwag’s fitness infuriated mediapersons.
Dhoni also lost his cool when asked if news of Sehwag’s fitness was deliberately leaked.
“You are blaming me for leaking the news… you have all gathered here. Then why doesn’t one of you stand up and…” Dhoni said, but he was cut short by a journalist, who said: “No we are not (blaming you)”.
The team’s administrative manager, V. Chamundeshwaranath, who was by Dhoni’s side during the media briefing said, interjected to say that a decision on Sehwag’s fitness will be taken by Wednesday. But surprisingly, within a few minutes, the BCCI issued a statement saying that Sehwag has been ruled out and named Dinesh Karthik as his replacement.
