Despite disgrace, most team-mates want Terry to lead England
February 2nd, 2010 - 2:59 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )London, Feb. 2 (ANI): While calls to strip disgraced John Terry of his captaincy have intensified, England stars want boss Fabio Capello to keep Terry as their captain.
The Football Association (FA) has confirmed that the decision on whether Terry is axed will be left entirely to Capello.
But despite Terry’s affair with team-mate Wayne Bridge’s former partner, most senior players still want him to stay skipper.
While some Manchester City aces wore ‘Team Bridge’ vests on Sunday in support of their pal, but City’s England men were not among them and a ‘Team Terry’ had started to emerge.
However, the question now is: Can Terry still command total respect in the dressing room and on the field?
Capello and Terry are to meet at the end of this week, as the Italian wants the matter resolved before he heads to Sunday’s Euro 2012 draw in Warsaw.
“I know everything. I can’t say anything at the moment but will be back in London on Thursday,” The Sun quoted Capello, as saying from his home in Switzerland.
The England players will accept whatever Capello decides - but hope he will forgive and forget.
“John led us to South Africa and he should be the man captaining the side at the finals. To change skipper now would be too disruptive and potentially damage the chance we have of doing well,” one player said.
But the players have sympathy for Bridge as he has been put in a difficult situation not of his making. (ANI)
