Dempo, Mumbai FC finish 1-1December 10th, 2008 - 12:19 am ICT by IANS
Kolkata, Dec 9 (IANS) Dempo Sports club and Mumbai FC finished 1-1 while Chirag United and State Bank of Travancore were locked 2-2 in the inconsequential group A league matches of the 30th Federation Cup football tournament at Barasat Tuesday.Dempo, already through to the semi-finals from the group, tested their bench strength, while the Mumbai outfit also utilised the reserves with their chances of a last four berth having already ended.
Dempo went ahead early in the outing with Clifford Miranda netting a header of a Joachim Abranches cross.
The Mumbaikars restored parity in the 37th minute with Alex Ambrose thundering in a freekick which left Dempo custodian Abhijit Mondal stranded.
The day’s earlier match between SBT and Chirag saw sloppy defending from both sides, with national chief coach Bob Houghton present at the Vidyasagar stadium to watch the proceedings.
Out of the reckoning for a place in the pre-summit round, the rivals seemed to lack motivation with the quality of fare on offer being poor.
Chirag drew first blood in the 19th minute when striker Shankar Oraon found the target.
A harmless cross from Snehashis Chakraborty saw SBT goalkeeper Jean Christian make heavy weather of the ball, and Oraon placed home.
The scoreline became 1-1 in the 22nd minute as Abdul Hakim volleyed into the net an R. Kannan header. None of the Chirag rearguards tried to challenge Hakim.
However, Chirag wrested the lead a little later. Seasoned campaigner Basudeb Mondal sent a floater for Oraon, who lobbed into the net, as his marker made little effort to dissuade him.
But within a minute, the bankmen again drew level with an unmarked Kannan nodding in a centre from Rinil.
Dempo, topped the group with seven points, followed by Mumbai FC (3), SBT (2) and Chirag (2).
