Dempo beat East Bengal to win Super Cup titleFebruary 27th, 2008 - 11:35 pm ICT by admin
Gurgaon, Feb 27 (IANS) I-League champions Dempo Sports Club of Goa brought the curtain down on their brilliant season by winning the Super Cup with a 1-0 win over East Bengal here Wednesday. A solitary strike from Edeh Chidi in the 71st minute helped Dempo seal the title and atoned for their 0-4 loss to Mohun Bagan in the last edition. The strike proved too costly for East Bengal as they squandered all the five chances that came their way and Dempo struck from the only clear chance they got.
It has been terrific season for Dempo as baring the Federation Cup they have all the trophies in their cupboard and it will give them confidence ahead of their AFC Cup match against Lebanese club Al Alsar at home March 11.
East Bengal were desperately looking for some solace after their disappointing run in the I-League, where they had to fight relegation and finished 10th. But unfortunately luck was not on their side.
The Kolkata team looked the most potent side with Alvito D’Cunha and Brazilian Edmilson Marques playing upfront. The Brazilian squandered four scoring opportunities, which proved too costly. East Bengal’s got their first chance in the eighth minute when Marques had the goalie to beat but shot it way outside the net.
20th minute into the game, East Bengal saw another chance wasted as Alvito’s scorching left footer was parried away by Dempo custodian Abhijit Mondal. Chances came think and fast in the Kolkata team’s way but they failed to capitalise.
Volleys of attack left the Dempo defence rattled but after the change of sides they looked like an organised lot. Ranty Martins came close to open the scoring for the Goan side in the 53rd minute but shot wide.
The winner came in the 71st minute after Chidi slammed into the net after a rebound off goalkeeper Subrata Paul. The East Bengal goalkeeper did well to thwart a right footer from Dempo’s Brazilian playmaker Beto. But the save rebounded and Chidi, who was let loose in the defence, pounced on it to get past Paul.
In the dying minutes of the game, the I-League champions got another chance to double their league but Beto’s shot hit the upright.
