London, July 27 (IANS) Biswajit Dey (27), who works in Radisson Edwardian Hotels Group, arrived at Olympic Park early in the morning. Making his way towards the main entrance into the Park, he said: “I’ve waited for this event for long.”

Dey together with his friend Rohan Patel, who works in Wembley, had planned for months to buy the 800 gram Olympic torch. “We are still looking for one, may be at this venue, or search online as quite a few are still selling.”

The 800 mm torch, complete with 8000 perforations, is heavily subsidised by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games.

“I noticed everything about this torch starts with the magic number ‘8′ - 8,000 torches manufactured, 8,000 torchbearers, 8,000 perforations, and so on,” Dey said.

The torch, which sells for 199 pounds, cost the organising committee495 pounds.

A few who own the torches rent them out for a few hours.

“It is a good idea to find an original buyer and borrow it for a day to get photographed with it,” said Kalpen Patel, Rohan’s elder brother.

The master torch, which keeps the Olympic flame alive, was lit at the Temple of Hera, Olympia, home of the ancient Olympic Games, and undertook a journey of 8,000 miles over 70 days to Olympic Park.

The torches enabled a few philanthropists raise funds for their charities and others to keep it as a souvenir with the pride of owning a piece of history.
