Delhi’s Semwal leads in Inter-state golf
June 14th, 2011 - 7:59 pm ICT by IANSCoimbatore, June 14 (IANS) Sidharth Semwal (73) and Honey Baisoya (76), representing Delhi B, took a three-shot lead at the end of the first round of the Interstate Golf championship at the Coimbatore Golf Club here Tuesday.
The duo was three clear of Karnataka A (S. Chikkarangappa-77 and Khalin Joshi-75) and Karnataka B (Udayan Mane-79 and C.G. Somaiah-73), both of whom were at 152.
In the individual championships, Semwal from Army Golf Club, Delhi and C.G. Somaiah from Karnataka Golf Association shared the lead with identical rounds of 73 each. It was once again windy but both the leaders did a good job of holding on.
Semwal had a tough front nine with a 38, but made up on the back stretch with a 35. Somaiah was flawless on the front nine with a three-under 33, but on the back nine he ran into problems and carded a four-over 40 with four bogeys and no birdies for a total of 73.
Asian Games team silver medallist and Faldo Series winner, Abhijit Chadha of Chandigarh and Karan Taunk (Beldih, Jamshedpur) were lying tied third. Khalin Joshi, of KGA A, was fifth with a round of 75.
The Inter-state championships is the second leg of the nine categorised tournaments of the Indian Amateur Tour 2011 held under the aegis of the Indian Golf Union.
The field of 87 is made up of 24 from the Order of Merit, 12 representing State teams who have got direct entry (three teams of two players from Services and three teams from Andhra Pradesh Golf Association), and the rest have come through the qualifying round held last week. There are a total of 30 teams.
The leading Team standings after the first day: 1. 149: Delhi B (Sidharth Semwal 73 & Honey Baisoya 76); 2. 152: Karnataka A (S. Chikkarangappa 77 & Khalin Joshi 75); Karnataka B (Udayan Mane 79 & C.G. Somaiah 73); 4. 153: Chandigarh (H.S. Kang 79 & Abhijit Chadha 74).
