Delhi’s Bhatia dedicates ton to Kolkata’s hospital fire victims
December 14th, 2011 - 10:56 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Dec 14 (IANS) Delhi batsman Rajat Bhatia, who struck a gritty 163 not out on day two of the Ranji Trophy game against Bengal Wednesday, dedicated his ton to the victims of the AMRI tragedy fire.
The 32-year-old batsman, who was unbeaten for 59 at stumps Tuesday, played a key role in the visitors making a challenging 392 in their first knock at the Eden Gardens.
“I want to dedicate this hundred to the people who lost their lives in the Kolkata hospital fire. I was in Delhi when the incident happened. It was terrible and I was determined to do well here as I wanted to dedicate my performance to the victims,” said the cricketer who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“I am very happy to play this knock at the Eden Gardens. I am a KKR player and this is my second home. So I always wanted to do well in Bengal,” he added.
Ninety three people, mostly infirm patients trapped in their bed, and staff were choked to death in a pre-dawn blaze in the high-cost medical facility in South Kolkata’s Dhakuria.
