Delhi Police gears up to nab public tipplers
April 1st, 2011 - 12:50 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, March 31 (IANS) After instances of people drinking in public places and on the roads here Wednesday night after India’s World Cup semifinal win against Pakistan, Delhi Police are gearing up to prevent a recurrance of this ahead of Saturday’s final in Mumbai.
“Drinking in public is a nuisance with a serious potential to result in brawls and quarrels causing serious injuries, death and damage to public and private property. This affects the peace and tranquility of the area and creates problems in maintaining law and order,” said a senior police officer.
He also said that special teams will be deputed to maintain law and order and nab the people drinking at the public places where large screens will be put up to watch World Cup final in the city.
To check drunk driving, the traffic police too have pulled up their socks for Friday and Saturday as people in a drunken state took out celebration rallies in various parts of the city, causing traffic problems Wednesday.
“We have deputed our team for night checks and will be setting temporary barricades to nab the drunk drivers,” said the officer.
Roads in south and central Delhi witnessed heavy traffic Wednesday with people celebrating the fall of Pakistan’s every wicket and causing traffic woes for people.
“There will be zero tolerance against drunk driving on the roads of the national capital,” said the officer.
Police have also asked vendors unauthorisedly selling eatables and juices outside liquor shops to close down.
