Delhi CWG will be most successful Games ever: KrishnaSeptember 23rd, 2010 - 12:29 pm ICT by ANI
New Delhi, Sep 23(ANI): External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna has said that India would be “able to deliver” a successful Commonwealth Games, and stressed that the event would meet international standards.
Krishna’s comments came after complaints from several countries, and the withdrawal of some athletes amid hygiene and safety concerns.
“We will see to it that the Commonwealth Games are conducted according to international standards, and the athletes who come to participate in these Games will feel quite happy about their conditions,” The BBC quoted Krishna, as saying.
“We will be able to deliver on the Commonwealth Games and it will be one of the most successful Games that the Commonwealth will have undertaken,” he added.
The October 3-14 Games in New Delhi has been plagued by construction delays, allegations of corruption and a dengue fever outbreak.
A collapsed bridge injuring dozens of workers on Tuesday and the desperate state of the athletes’ village - described as ‘unfit for human habitation’ - has also cast major doubts over countries turning up for the Games.
Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games Federation President Mike Fennell is due to arrive in the Indian capital on Thursday for a meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to discuss the problems. (ANI)
