Deepmala, Abraham perform below par at national athletics meet

Madurai, June 16 (IANS) National record holders Deepmala Devi and Joseph Abraham performed below par and failed to better their own marks on the second day of the ongoing 48th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championship here Monday. Jharkhand’s Deepmala still managed to maintain her supremacy and won the women’s 20,000 metres walk event at the M.G.R. Stadium here. She clocked 1::47:55.57, which was eight minutes less than the national record of 1::39:00.60 set by her in this meet in 2006.

Her state-mate Y. Bala Devi finished second in 1::51:13.58 and Maharashtra’s Supriya Adak was third with 1::53:15.99.

In the men’s 400m hurdles, P. Shankar of Andhra Pradesh won the gold with a timing of 50.89 secs while Kerala’s Abraham came second in 50.97 secs. T. Balamurugan of Tamil Nadu won the bronze in 51.95 secs.

Abraham was way behind his national record of 49.51 secs set in Osaka last year.
