Ahmedabad, April 4 (IANS) Abraham de Villiers Friday became the first South African and 11th overall to record a double century in India. De Villiers remained unbeaten on 217 on the second day of the second Test match at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera here. He became the first batsman to post a double century against India at Motera and the third overall to register the feat at this venue, joining Rahul Dravid (222 vs. New Zealand in 2003-04) and Sachin Tendulkar (217 vs. New Zealand in 1999-00).
His previous highest was 178 off 352 balls (551 minutes) against West Indies at Bridgetown in 2004-05.
The other statistical highlights of the day are as follows:
# Villiers’ aforesaid double century is his fifth Test hundred - his first against India.
# South Africa (494/7) posted their highest innings total at Ahmedabad, eclipsing their 244 in November 1996.
# Jacques Kallis (132) and De Villiers were associated in a stand of 256, a South African record for the fifth wicket against India, bettering the 164 between Kallis and Lance Klusener at Bangalore in 1999-00.
# The aforesaid stand is actually the best for any wicket for South Africa against India, bettering the 236 for the first wicket between Andrew Hudson and Gary Kirsten at Kolkata in 1996-97. The only other 200-plus stand for South Africa against India is the 212 for the second wicket between Gary Kirsten and Daryll Cullinan at Kolkata in 1996-97.
# The 256-run stand between Kallis and De Villiers is now the highest for any wicket-position by any visiting pair at Motera, surpassing the 154 for the seventh wicket between Imran Khan and Ijaz Faqih for Pakistan in 1986-87.
# The aforesaid stand is the second best by any pair for the fifth wicket against India, next only to the 293 between Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul for West Indies at Georgetown in 2001-02.
# Kallis (132 off 275 balls) registered his 30th Test century - his second against India. Kallis’ 132 is now his highest innings against India, surpassing his 121 off 259 balls at Kolkata in November 2004.
# Kallis is now the first South African and the seventh in Test annals to register 30 or more centuries, joining Sachin Tendulkar (39), Ricky Ponting (34), Sunil Gavaskar (34), Brian Lara (34), Steve Waugh (32) and Matthew Hayden (30).
# Kallis has now registered 21 hundreds at two-down and his tally is bettered only by Sachin Tendulkar (34) and Brian Lara (24).
# Kallis’ average of 70.26 at batting poisition 4 is the best - 5902 in 64 Tests (102 innings).
