Bangalore, March 15 (IANS) Canada’s veteran allrounder John Davison will retire from international cricket after the team’s last World Cup league game against Australia Wednesday.

Davison, at a media interaction ahead of the match here, said it was “fitting” to end his career against Australia, the country where he played most of his cricket.

“It is pretty fitting that it is against Australia,” said Davison. “I have lived all my life there though I was never quite good enough to get a game for them. It will be a great experience to play against them. There are some guys in the team who I have had a fair bit to do with, playing against or coaching. So, it would be nice to have a good showing against them.”

The 40-year-old played for South Australia and is currently one of the coaches in Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence. The explosive batsman was born in British Columbia but moved to Australia at a young age.

Davison, playing his third World Cup, shot to fame after hitting the then fastest century against the West Indies in the 2003 edition. He made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in the same competition and since then has played in 31 ODIs, scoring 785 runs and taking 31 wickets.

Canada’s captain and three-time World Cup teammate Ashish Bagai, spoke of his good friend’s retirement.

“John has brought a professionalism, expectation, and self belief that propelled us as a team and organisation to new heights. His performances on the biggest stage have laid the foundation for a new generation of Canadian cricketers to strive to achieve.”

“I have enjoyed and learned much about the sport during 10 years that we played together, we shared in many great moments, and I wish him and his family the very best in his future endeavours.”
