Madrid, Dec 4 (IANS) The Argentinian doubles pair of David Nalbandian and Eduardo Schwank won Saturday’s doubles rubber to keep their country in with a chance of winning the Davis Cup against Spain, who lead the final 2-1.
Nalbandian and Schwank enjoyed a comfortable straight sets win 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 against the Spanish pairing of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco.
Lopez and Verdasco were under pressure after they lost to France in straight sets in the semifinal and they were struggling again in Seville, Xinhua reported.
There was once again an incredible atmosphere in the Estadio de la Cartuja, but it was of no help to the Spaniards as Lopez saw his service broken in the first game of the third set. Nalbandian then held to put Argentina 2-0 ahead.
The remaining games went with serve until the ninth of the set when the Argentine duo broke Verdasco’s serve to win the game.
Sunday’s two remaining singles ties will now decide the outcome of the competition.
Spain had taken a 2-0 lead Friday as Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer both won their singles ties. Nadal defeated Juan Monaco in three sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, while Ferrer had to dig deep for a five set marathon against Juan Martin del Potro.
