danteOct. 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Dante Wesley, corner-back of the Carolina Panthers was thrown out of a game against Tampa Bay due to a completely unwarranted and unprovoked hit on the Tampa Bay returner Clifton Smith.

The Panthers were moving towards a smooth victory against Tampa Bay when Wesley made the unprecedented attack on Clifton Smith. It happened when Smith was trying to field a punt from Jason Baker. Wesley just sprinted too him. Within seconds, he had hit him under the helmet. Smith fell down immediately after he had taken the hit. He remained that way for sometime and then was taken out of the field by his teammates. He could not take part in the rest of the game as he suffered a concussion.

It was quite obvious that the hit was an unprovoked one and therefore unwarranted for. Wesley was immediately asked to leave the field, which was the best thing he could do, considering that he became surrounded by indignant and murderous Tampa Bay players as soon as he had hit Smith. He was suspended from that particular game and could also be asked to pay a huge fine as compensation.

The act was described by most as simply ‘dirty’. Many others used language that could not possibly be printed. Wesley defends himself cautiously. He agrees that it was wrong for him to launch himself on the unsuspecting Smith. He insists that it was not his intention to hurt anybody, that he was only “trying to make a play.” He also hopes that he would not be issued a fine.
