CWG wrestling: One gold, one silver and two bronze for India (Roundup)

New Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS) Indian wrestlers continued to impress with their performance in the Commonwealth Games, winning one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the Greco-Roman category here Wednesday.

Indian wrestlers had won all the three gold medals on offer on the opening day, taking the total to four gold, one silver and two bronze medals, all in the Greco-Roman category, which is making its debut at the Games.

Rajender Kumar (55kg) won gold while Manoj Kumar settled for silver in the 84kg. Dharmender Dalal (120kg) and Sunil Kumar (66kg) won bronze.

In a one-sided affair, Rajender demolished Pakistan’s Azhar Hussain 11-0 amid deafening roar from the near capacity crowd at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex. Rajender braved a nose injury he received in the first bout and completely dominated Hussain in both the rounds.

Promise Mwenga of Canada won the bronze medal.

Rajender had earlier won gold at 2009 Commonwealth Championship and silver at the 2010 Asian Championships.

Wrestling coach Hargobind Singh said: “We were sure of gold medal in this category. The Pakistan wrestler was very weak in his technique.”

In the 84 kg category, Nigerian Agbonavbare beat Manoj Kumar in the final 7-2.

Earlier Tuesday morning, Manoj defeated South Africa’s Van Zyl, who won bronze, to enter the finals.

Manoj, who is an Indian Railways Sports Club wrestler, had earlier won gold at the 2007 and 2009 Commonwealth Championships.

In another one-sided match in the 120kg category, wrestler Dharmender Dalal won bronze, defeating Cyprus’ Varntan Aparian by a convincing 12-0 margin.

“Though I am not happy with my performance today, I am feeling a little bit satisfied that I finally managed to win a medal for my country. I was in control of the bout,” said Dalal.

Ivan Popov of Australia, and T. Mamman, of Nigeria, won gold and silver in the 120kg category.

In 66kg category, Sunil outclassed B. Hawthorn of Wales 11-0. M. Dykun of England won gold while the silver went to J. Bond of Canada.
