CWG shooting: Tejaswini, Meena miss gold by one point, get bronze
October 11th, 2010 - 1:46 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS) India shooters Tejaswini Sawant and Meena Kumari missed the gold by one point in the women’s 50 metres rifle prone and had to be content with a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games at the Karni Singh Shooting Range here Monday.
The gold went to Scotland’s Jen McIntosh (591) and Kay Copland (578)while English girls Michelle Smith (590) and Sharon Lee (579) got the silver. Both England and Scotland were tied at 1,169 points, but England won the gold on the basis of 60 perfect 10s while Scotland had 52 perfect 10s.
Tejaswini, a world champion in 50 metres prone, shot 583 while Meena 585 as India finished with 1,168 points.
Jen said that the conditions were pretty tough and the strong wind made life difficult for shooters.
“The conditions were pretty tough. It wasn’t easy out there today. The wind was up and it was quiet strong. It was flicking about a wee bit. We shoot at a reasonably sheltered range back home and so it was a bit of struggle,” said Jen.
Copland said it was Jen, who saved the day for Scotland.
“It is a total shock win. I was saved by my teammate. I don’t know what went wrong. The wid was strong and I couldn’t predict it. I tried to fix it but couldn’t get it right. We have won the gold and now it doesn’t matter,” she said.
