Vancouver, Feb 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Curling was introduced as an official sport in the Winter Olympic Games since the year 1998. However, most of the viewers are not yet well acquainted about the rules of the sport. Since the introduction of the sport in the Winter Olympic, the game is gaining popularity but the sport is confusing to many. Though much is not about the game amidst the viewers, there is general interest among all about the game. With the tournament back in action, Curling is all over the news again.
The game is played on a sheet of carefully prepared ice. Curling apparently demands “strategy” and “determination.” Though the game is unknown to many, it is over 500 years old. If we look at the history, we find the mention of the sport in archives of Scotland.
The sport which became increasingly popular through the Winter Olympic, is enjoyed by both men and women. In tournaments, they start the game with 10 teams. At a time, 2 teams compete on the ice. They try to push 19.1 kg stones aiming for rings. The target is to make the stones reach as close to the middle of the rings as possible. There are 10 “ends” in each game during which each member of the 4 person teams throw or slide 2 stones. The curl part of the game begins when 2 members of each team sweep the ice in front of the stone in order to direct it and control the speed. The team with the maximum number of stones near the center of the rings becomes the winner.
