Cricketer Warner wants to be Australias next first choice all-rounderJanuary 18th, 2009 - 2:22 pm ICT by ANI
Hobart, Jan.18 (ANI): Upcoming New South Wales cricketer David Warner, who is also known as the Matraville Mauler, has answered another SOS from Australia’’s cricket selectors, and has expressed a desire to be the countrys next first choice Test all-rounder.
David Warner will put his pyrotechnics on show at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, Tasmania today for game two of the one-day series against South Africa, marking his one-day international debut.
According to news.com.au, Warner has outlined plans to become a Test all-rounder by bowling leg-spin.
“I want to play Test cricket and being an all-rounder can help me achieve that. In the nets at NSW, I”m always rolling the arm over. I know it’’s different to bowling in a real match, but I don”t want to lose that part of my game,”” Warner was quoted, as saying.
In a team loaded with millionaires, Warner has become the Rocky Balboa of Australian cricket - the player all fans want to see after his Twenty20 debut last week.
The 22-year-old was about to go to sleep on Friday night when he took a call advising him to pack his bags as a replacement for the injured Michael Clarke in Hobart.
It has been a whirlwind week for Warner since he hammered 89 off 43 balls at the MCG. It has to be remembered he hasn”t even played first-class cricket for the Blues.
Warner flew into Hobart yesterday, having traversed 6300 kilometers and four cities in six days.
Millions of Australians will tune in today hoping he belts the Proteas to all parts of Bellerive Oval.
Warner is aiming high and he is keen to unveil another string to his bow when he finally does land on the first-class stage.
Admitted to Australian cricket’’s Centre of Excellence two years ago as a leg-spinner, Warner will rekindle his interest in bowling to enhance his prospects of wearing the baggy green.
Warner has worked with Warne and has been known to bowl leg breaks and off-spin for grade side Eastern Suburbs. (ANI)
