Cricket tri-series: India A beat New Zealand ASeptember 18th, 2008 - 12:21 am ICT by IANS
Hyderabad, Sep 17 (IANS) An unbeaten half century by skipper S. Badrinath led India A to a five-wicket victory over New Zealand A in the triangular cricket series at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here Wednesday. All three teams in the tri-series, which also includes Australia A, have four points each after the first round of matches. The next round will be played in Chennai from Sept 21.
Put in to bat, New Zealand were left wanting for a solid partnership as they succumbed for a paltry 167 in 44.5 overs. It needed India just 34.2 overs to cross the target - but not before losing five wickets.
Neil Broom (52) and Grant Elliot (35 not out) did stabilise the Kiwi innings but once Broom was run out by a sharp throw from Suresh Raina at deep square leg, none of the other batsmen showed any patience to stay for long. Peter Futon, though, coming first down, did play a gritty knock of 40.
In reply, India gave early hope to the New Zealanders by losing three quick wickets. That brought Badrinath to the crease and he played with poise and despite losing Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik cheaply, remained steadfast. He and Yusuf Pathan then took India home with almost 16 overs left, earning a bonus point.
