Cricket teams almost flew into airport ‘accident’

Chandigarh, Dec 17 (IANS) Minutes before a special chartered flight carrying the cricket teams of England and India flew into Chandigarh Tuesday, there was a ‘near collision’ on the ground between two passenger aircraft at the airport here.Airport officials, requesting anonymity, said the ‘near collision’ between the aircraft of Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines was being looked into even as the incident gave tense moments to officials at the airport.

Both aircraft came as close as 10-15 feet from each other before a ground marshal realised that the wings of the aircraft had come too close and could collide. He asked the Jet Airways flight to apply emergency brakes and abandon taxiing to the main runway.

The flights were together carrying nearly 140 passengers. The Kingfisher flight passengers were de-planing when the Jet flight to New Delhi approached close to it. A third flight of Air India was already standing there, adding to the congestion on the small airport.

“The incident happened because the apron and taxiway of the airport is small,” airport director Sunil Dutt said.

Officials said that no probe has been ordered into the incident.

As the congestion confusion reigned at the airport due to the near miss of these aircraft on the ground, the chartered plane carrying the cricketers flew into the airport. The air traffic controller asked the flight to hover around for a few minutes before allowing it to land.

Even after landing, the cricketers’ flight remained stranded on the runway for over 15 minutes while the apron of the airport was being cleared of the other flights.
