Cricket moghul Stanford hospitalized after prison fight with fellow inmate
September 26th, 2009 - 4:12 pm ICT by ANIHouston, Sep 26(ANI): Texan billionaire Sir Allen Stanford, who is in jail awaiting trial on charges related to an alleged seven billion dollar Ponzi scam, was taken to hospital after being injured in a prison fight with another inmate.
“Stanford was being treated after an altercation at the private Joe Corley Detention Facility in Conroe about 40 miles north of Houston,” The Daily Star quoted Deputy US Marshal Alfredo Perez, as saying.
Perez also said that Stanford suffered minor injuries, but declined to discuss details of the altercation.
He said that the incident was being investigated by the US Marshals Service.
Stanford has been accused in several fraud investigations, and has been charged by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission with fraud and multiple violations of U.S. securities laws for alleged “massive ongoing fraud” involving billions of dollars in certificates of deposits. He has also been accused of running a Ponzi scheme targeting clients of his offshore bank in Antigua.
Stanford has been in a detention facility in Houston since his arrest in June.
Earlier, Stanford had spent five days in the hospital undergoing heart tests. (ANI)
