Cricket Australia appoints McDermott as bowling coach
May 12th, 2011 - 1:16 pm ICT by IANSMelbourne, May 12 (IANS) Cricket Australia (CA) Thursday appointed former fast bowler Craig McDermott as a bowling coach for the Australian team.
McDermott, who took 291 wickets in 71 Tests for Australia between 1984 and 1996, and South African legend Allan Donald were the two strong contenders for the post but CA chose to appoint the Australian. Donald is likely to continue as New Zealand’s bowling coach.
CA also re-appointed former Test opener Justin Langer as the assistant coach for 12 months.
CA general manager (cricket) Michael Brown said McDermott’s credentials and experience played a critical role in his appointment.
“Craig McDermott, who took 291 wickets in 71 Tests for Australia between 1984 and 1996, was among a strong field of candidates from around the world,” Brown said.
“His impressive record as an international player, during which he successfully overcame a number of setbacks, combined with his recent record at the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence and with the Australia team in Bangladesh, all impressed us that he was the outstanding candidate for this role. He will provide valuable support to the new Test Captain, Michael Clarke, coach Tim Nielsen, and the playing group,” said Brown.
Brown and Australian coach Tim Nielsen interviewed a number of Australian and overseas candidates for the 12-month appointment.
“It is great to be back as part of the Australian team set-up again and I cannot wait to get started working with the bowlers and the rest of the team,” McDermott said.
“We have got some challenging tours ahead in the coming months but I am excited at the opportunity to be part of the group that helps get Australia back to number one in all forms of cricket.”
Meanwhile, Brown also said that CA was delighted to have Langer in the role of assistant coach for 12 months.
“Justin’s record as a player and then over the last 18 months, as coach, leader and mentor within the Australia team coaching group, speaks for itself and we are all delighted he has agreed to continue his outstanding work with the Australia team,” Brown said.
Langer said he was committed to motivating the Australian team.
“I am excited about the opportunity to be an integral part of the resurgence of Australian cricket. I am also thrilled at being able to take the next step in my development as a coach by being involved with such a committed and motivated group of people,” Langer said.
