Confident Gayle predicts cakewalk against Aussies in ODIs
February 7th, 2010 - 11:55 am ICT by ANIMelbourne, Feb.7 (ANI): A confident West Indies captain Chris Gayle has said that he is not interested in looking back at the disastrous Test series against Australia, but more focussed on ensuring that his team finishes on a high note in the one-day series that has begun from today.
“I don’t want to look back at the Test series, that is gone and we have dealt with it. We want to finish the summer on a high note. Australia is an all-round team with so many options, especially bowling. But we believe we can get the job done,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Gayle, as saying.
“I don’t really care what he has to say as far as results go. Our one-day record is pretty good over the past couple of months and we want that to continue. We have guys now with 30-40 games behind them - guys like Cameron White and Shane Watson who can turn up and win games - and there is great self-belief within the team,” Australian captain Ricky Ponting retorted.
Ponting, however, said that his side would not underestimate the West Indians.
“He (Gayle) is a dynamic player at the top of the order. He started the tour pretty well with that century in Canberra and he is a very good one-day player. One thing that we touched on at the team meeting [before training] is that our plans to him must be spot-on. We have a pretty good idea what we want to do against him, regarding line and length and areas to bowl,” Ponting said.
Gayle believes opportunities exist for several younger players.
“The young guys are the future. Dwayne Smith and Kieron Pollard have played Twenty20 cricket here this summer and look good. This is their chance,” he said. (ANI)
