CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009: El Salvador Beats Costa Rica

ticoEl Salvador has won against Costa Rica in the opening round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament 2009 on Friday, July 4, at 3:00. At the end of the match the score on the display board read 2-1. The adrenalin pumping match took place in front of a huge crowd of 27,000 madly cheering fans. Both the goals of the Costa Rica team were scored by Osael Romero, the last one coming in the 86th minute of the match, which actually sealed the fate for the Tico win. Romero was aided in scoring both the goals by the dynamic William Reyes.

The goal that was passed to Romero by Reyes was deflected by a Costa Rican defender; however Romero managed to recover lost grounds and from 15 yards away, put the ball in to the net, scoring the winning goal. The first goal was also scored in the same manner, earlier in the match, that gave the team of El Salvador an early start in Friday’s match.

The fans who had attended the game had flocked in quite early on to the stadium arena, before the match. The large turn out had almost lead to a massive clogging of the streets surrounding the Home Depot Center at least from a mile around the venue.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup kicked off on yesterday, on July 3rd, with the opening night match being between El Salvador and Costa Rica. This is the 10th season of the 12 team championship tournament. Costa Rica has won the last four matches that they have played in and this is the first time that Costa Rica has lost to El Salvador since 1997.
