Commonwealth security concerns will not affect Kiwi cricket tour to India
September 23rd, 2010 - 2:58 pm ICT by ANIWellington, Sep 23 (ANI): Concerned about the security and safety of players, New Zealand participation in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games may be in doubt, but it is not going to affect the Black Caps planned cricket tour of India in November.
The build-up to the Commonwealth Games has been marred by concerns regarding security, safety of athletes and incomplete building work.
New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association chief Heath Mills, who is in Delhi on a pre-tour security check of India, described the well-documented concerns about October’s Games as real.
He added that he didn’t envisage New Zealand’s top cricketers would have anything to worry about ahead of their tour of the sub continent.
New Zealand’s November tour to India, in which they are scheduled to play three tests and five one-dayers, has been given the all clear by Mills, Stuff.co.nz reports.
“From a cricket perspective, our pre-tour is going very well. We’ve been hugely bouyed by the support we’ve received. We’ve been presented detailed security plans and we’ve had a chance to question those rigorously,” Mills said.
“We have made some changes but my sense at the moment is that the tour at this stage will be going ahead. We’ve been very comfortable with things and have been impressed with the Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) and the Indian Government’s commitment to it.
“The important point to note is that a cricket tour is quite different to the Commonwealth Games. There’s only one or two teams to protect and secure at a venue, which is a whole lot easier than a big Commonwealth Games event,” Mills added.
Mills has also given the green light to New Zealand A’s tour to Zimbabwe next month. (ANI)
