Nov 13, 2003: New Delhi wins bid for 2010 Commonwealth Games by outvoting Canada’s Hamilton in the general assembly of the Commonwealth Games Federation at Montego Bay, Jamaica, 68-46. New Delhi becomes the third city from the developing world to host the Games after Kingston (1966) and Kuala Lumpur (1998).
Oct 25, 2004: Then sports minister Sunil Dutt becomes chairman of the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Feb 10, 2005: Organising Committee of Commonwealth Games, Delhi, formed. site identified for Games Village.
Mar 26, 2006: India gets 22 gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games to take the fourth position.
Oct 12, 2008: Third Commonwealth Youth Games, regarded as a preparatory meet, starts in Pune.
June 8, 2009: Green Games initiative launched on World Environment Day. Seventy-one saplings planted to represent 71 Commonwealth Games Associations.
Oct 29, 2009: Queen’s Baton Relay starts from Buckingham Palace, London.
June 25, 2010: Queen’s Baton Relay reaches India, after passing through 70 countries and territories and with 100 days left for the Games.
Sept 16, 2010: Games Village opened by Delhi Lt. Governor Tejinder Khanna. For the next few days the vilalge occupies the spotlight for all the wrong reasons as several participatign nations call it “unhygienic and unclean”. India launches massive clean-up operation.
Sept 19, 2010: Two Taiwanese tourists injured in shootout at Jama Masjid triggering security concerns among some participating nations.
Sept 23, 2010: The Main Press Centre opens.
Oct 3, 2010: Opening ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games.
