Sydney, Mar. 30 (ANI): New Australian captain Michael Clarke will have to set his sights very high to ensure his place in the sports history.

Embarking on a “life-changing experience” as Australia’s 43rd Test cricket captain, Clarke will have to take steps to come out of predecessor Ricky Ponting’s shadow, and turn himself from a helper to a leader, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

While his career figures are sound he has rarely been able to impose himself on an opposition or a series; the pressure on him will become only more relentless with the captain’s responsibilities added to his kitbag.

Clarke’s first challenge will be to avoid the ignominious end that befell Kim Hughes in 1984.

Clarke, 29, appears to thrive on the leadership role. He is an inventive and creative onfield captain, an astute tactician and sound man manager who speaks the language of the new generation of cricketers upon which his - and Australia’s future - will inevitably depend. (ANI)
