Clarke, Bracken return to Australian squadJanuary 27th, 2009 - 3:35 pm ICT by IANS
Melbourne, Jan 27 (IANS) Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke and fast bowler Nathan Bracken were selected for the next two one-dayers against South Africa and New Zealand, Cricket Australia (CA) announced here Tuesday. With the one-day series against South Africa already lost, Australia will be pinning hopes on the duo to salvage some pride in the series finale in Perth. A win in the inconsequential final match, will help South Africa leapfrog the hosts into top spot in the ODI rankings.
Clarke returns after missing the past three games with a thumb injury and Bracken missed Monday night’s game at the Adelaide Oval with a calf strain. Both the players replace spinner Nathan Hauritz and paceman Ryan Harris.
National Selection Panel Chairman Andrew Hilditch felt it was unfortunate that Hauritz had to be omitted after limited opportunities.
“It is unfortunate that Hauritz has been omitted after limited opportunities, it is unlikely that we would play a specialist spinner in Perth and therefore it has been decided he will return to New South Wales where he will be available for selection for the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield match in Newcastle,” Hilditch said in a statement.
“Nathan Bracken has recovered from the calf injury which ruled him out of last night’s clash and therefore returns while Ryan Harris has been omitted from the squad which has been selected for the two games in Perth,” he added.
