Churchill Bros coach gets offer from LebanonMarch 13th, 2008 - 10:21 pm ICT by admin
Margao, March 13 (IANS) Churchill Brothers Sports Club coach Karim Bencherifa, who has now quit the Durand Cup champions, has been made an offer to coach Lebanese League leaders Al Ansar. Al Ansar’s unexpected offer has provided Bencherifa an interesting option as the Moroccan coach is also in talks with Mohun Bagan and is heavily tipped to coach the Kolkata side next season.
“Al Ansar is an option, but Mohun Bagan is still the favourite to get my signature,” Bencherifa told IANS.
Al Ansar is understood to have approached Bencherifa a day after they lost to Dempo Sports Club in the AFC Cup Group A opener here.
Al Ansar officials had a dinner with the Moroccan coach exploring the possibility of taking him to Lebanon.
Jamal Taha now coaches the Lebanese side, which is going through an extended dip in form.
The Lebanese Cup winners have now failed to register a win for four matches on the trot and their lead at the top of the Lebanese league has been cut down to just two points, a far cry from the seven-point advantage, a fortnight ago.
Interestingly, Taha had tendered his resignation early last week but was coaxed into continuing.
Taha is a legend at Al Ansar having featured in all 11 consecutive national league title wins between 1988 and 1999.
Meanwhile, Bencherifa ended weeks of suspense yesterday by leaving Churchill Bros Sports Club by mutual consent.
The decision came after the coach held a meeting with Churchill Bros boss Churchill Alemao to discuss his future.
“I am leaving on an amicable and friendly note,” Bencherifa said.
