large_christinamchaleChristina McHale was stunned into a tragic defeat in her second round of the U.S.Open 2009, by the seasoned 29th seeded Russian queen of Tennis, Maria Sharapova who beat Tsvetana Pironkova (6-3,6-0) in the first round already.

On Thursday night Sharapova spoiled the temporary victory-fever that Englewood Cliffs native Christina McHale came down with after having defeated Slovenian Polona Hercog by 6-3,6-1 in her first round of the U.S. Open 2009 on Tuesday. Maria scored a clear cut 6-2,6-1 victory over Mchale to book her third meet with American teenager Melanie Oudin. 17 year old Oudin has stunned Russian Elena Dementieva(5-7,6-4,6-3) on Thursday afternoon to be eligible for the next round of the championship. Oudin beat Jelena Jankovic in the Wimbledon Championships in July earlier.

The 2006 U.S Open champion Sharapova could not participate in the tournament last year due to a shoulder injury, but seems to show unabated competitive spirit from the first day on court in Flushing Meadows. On Thursday she won the first set for 6-2 within 39 minutes with only 3 double faults. She managed to put down the high-spirited McHale who collapsed in an hour and 14 minutes match.

Sharapova is incomparable to any other player because she is a natural go-getter.Besides she has loads of experience compared to the teenagers she is facing , which gives her an upper hand at the tournament. However it is her agility and dedication to the sport that has payed off even after her layoff.

Earlier on Tuesday McHale had brimmed saying, that she was feeling a rush of excitement to play at what was her favorite tournament of the year. Naturally to have played and won in the first round itself had given her a periodic boost of confidence and a sense of achievement.
