Chilean Miner To Take Part In NYC Marathon 2010

minersNew York City, Nov 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A rescued miner who was trapped with his co-workers in Chile a few weeks back is going to create history. He is all set to take part in the New York City 2010 marathon. He hogged the headlines after he was rescued along with other miners from the San Jose mine in Chile The miner, Edison Pena is now going to take part in the marathon. The NYC Marathon officials decided to invite him after they came to know his story which was awesome to say the least.

When they had invited the rescued miner they thought he would possibly hold the finish tape or choose to be in lead vehicle. However, when the Chilean consulate told them that he wanted to take part in the marathon they were rather surprised. Mary Wittenberg, the New York Road Runners President said “He absolutely, 100 percent wants to participate”. She also added that ING New York City Marathon is all about inspiration and perseverance and the values were never more evident than during the survival and rescue of the miners in the Chile mine.

Moreover, Mary Wittenberg also said that the Marathon organizers are honored to have him in the event. The rescued miner used to run regularly during the two months he was trapped inside the mine with his coworkers. He later said that apart from running he tried to keep himself in shape by listening to his iPod. He likes the songs of Elvis Presley very much. The spectators would be surely looking forward to see how Edison Pena fares when he runs in the New York City marathon on Sunday.
