New Delhi, Dec 20 (IANS) India’s star football striker Sunil Chettri, recovering from a ligament tear, is certain to miss the friendly tie against Bayern Munich, slated for January 10 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
The Mohun Bagan forward said that the plaster from his left ankle would be removed January 5 and it will take another two weeks for him to get back to action. The friendly between India and Bayern Munich will be the farewell match of former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia and a part of the proceeds would be donated for the earthquake victims of Sikkim.
“It is a Grade-2 ligament tear on the left ankle and my plaster would be coming off on January 5. After that, it will be tentatively two weeks of rehab before I get back to action. Sitting idle at home is the most painful experience for a footballer’ But I’m helpless,” said Chettri, who was adjudged as footballer of the year.
Chettri, who has scored 13 goals in 17 international matches this year, said that he was happy with the award.
“It’s the highest recognition for an Indian footballer and I am honoured to receive the award for the second time. At a time when I confined to my home with my plastered leg, this is perhaps the best Christmas and New Year present,” he said.
Chettri said it was a great year for him.
“It all began with the Asian Cup where I scored two goals. I played for Chirag United in the I-League and then shifted base to Mohun Bagan. In between, I received the Arjuna Award and was part of the triumphant squad in the SAFF Championship. Looking back, it has been an excellent year for me,” he said.
