Chelsea’s ‘record signing non-performing’ star Torres could face the axe: Ancelotti

London, Apr 9(ANI): Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has said that striker Fernando Torres’ 50 million pound fee will not protect him from being dropped from the team.
Torres is yet to open his account for the Blues despite playing in nine games and once again squandered the chance to do so in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday.
When asked if there is any chance of Torres being axed for Tuesday’s return at Old Trafford, Ancelotti said: “Why not?”
“There is a lot of competition up front. It is my job to choose the best line-up and I don’t consider the money the club has paid for the players when I do that,” he added.
Ancelotti further denied suggestions that he is under orders from owner Roman Abramovich to keep picking the club’s record signing player for more matches in the championship.
“Roman is intelligent and he would never ask me to do this. You don’t judge a player by the money he earns. You judge his performance on the pitch,” the Sun quoted Ancelotti, as saying.
“I have to choose my team based on the training sessions, the condition of the players and their spirit. Fernando knows this very well,” he added.
Torres’ last goals came two and a half months ago in Liverpool’s 3-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 22. (ANI)
