Chelsea owner Abramovich backs scandal-hit Terry

London, Feb 1(ANI): Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has given his backing to skipper John Terry after he was accused of having an extra-marital affair with the former partner of his international team-mate Wayne Bridge.
Terry, married since 2007 to Toni, was booed every time he touched the ball during Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Burnley on Sunday, as extensive coverage in newspapers revealed his alleged relationship with Vanessa Perroncel.
It has led to calls from former players for him to give up the captaincy. However, the billionaire called Terry and assured him that he has the club’s total support.
“There is nothing but support for him at the club in a difficult time. The bottom line is this is a private matter. John has not done anything illegal and it’s up to him how he deals with it,” The Sun quoted a source close to the Russian, as saying.
“He’s a valuable team member and one of the Chelsea family, his position at the club is not in any doubt,” he added.
The comment comes after Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti stressed that there is no reason for the club to take action against Terry, saying he is a fantastic professional.
“As far as the England captaincy is concerned, I am not the manager of the England team. But there have been no discussions at the club about the captaincy of Chelsea - he is the leader. He is a fantastic captain and a fantastic player,” Ancelotti said.
“He plays well for us in every game and he has proved that with another important performance tonight. It is his private life that is in issue, but it is not an issue for work. Everyone at Chelsea supports him and his family,” he added. (ANI)
